Parts of Bone

4 Parts of Bone

1) Epiphysis : End or tip of bone derived feom 2°ossification centre.4 types of epiphysis
Pressure epiphysis :

  • Transmits weight and are articular
  • E.g. femoral head, upper end of tibia, lower end of radius
Traction epiphysis :
  • Provides attacment to tendons
  • E.g. Mastoid process,tubercles of humerus,trochanters of femur
Atavistic epiphysis :
  • Phylogenitically independent bone which has attched to other bone in human
  • E.g. coracoid process of scapula,os trigonum, posterior tubercle of talus
Aberrant epiphysis :
  • Not always present
  • E.g. head of 1st metacarpal and base of other metacarpals
2) Diaphysis :
  • Strogest part of bone
  • Ossify from 1° centre
3) Epiphyseal growth plate :
  • Zone of maximal growtg
  • Between epiphysis and metaphysis
4) Metaphysis :
  • Has hair pin arrangement of vessels
  • Zone of infection
  • More prone to injury
