Changes seen in circulation after birth

1) Ductus arteriosus
Remnant : ligamentum arteriosum
Physiological/functional closure :
  • Immediately after birth
  • Due to bradykinin mediated muscle contraction
  • Although it closes @ birth in normal full term baby, there is still some leak from aorta to P.artery.
  • In 20% cases closes @ end of 1st day,in 80% cases closes @ end of 2nd day ,in 100% closes @ end of 4th day
Anatomical closure
  • At 1 to 3 months
  • Due to TGF - B mediated proliferation of intima
2) Septum primum and septum secundum
Remnant : SP-fossa ovalis ; SS - annulus ovalis
Functional closure :
  • Immediately after birth
  • Due to raised LA pressure following 1st breath,SP is pressed over SS
Anatomical closure
  • Occurs @ about 1 year
3) Ductus Venosus
Remnant : ligamentum venosum

4) Left Umbilical vein
Remnant : ligamentum teres
